In September 2011, I started studying Biomedical Sciences at Utrecht University. As subjects were not always very challenging for me, I chose to enroll in the honours programme. During this extracurricular programme, I performed a literature research to the effect of exercise on release of factors from skeletal muscle. I really enjoyed being fully focused on a specific topic for a longer period of time. The writing of the literature study was very helpful for me to become aware that communication between and within cells is the topic that I find most interesting. As this aspect is abundant in cancer research, I started attending the master’s programme “Cancer, Stem cells & Developmental Biology” in Utrecht. Apart from the biomedical project, Fréderique and I decided to establish this foundation. So, besides biomedical knowledge and skills, we also gained other very valuable experiences during the honours programme.

The Honours Program has been determinant for my Bachelor's and Master's course and will certainly still be important in my future career. In 2011, I started my study Biomedical Sciences in Utrecht already having a strong preference for virology. Therefore, I focussed myself on the suppression of the immune system by a specific protein of the Influenza A virus during the individual project of the Honours Program. This has not only helped me to increase my knowledge and academic skills, but also confirmed my enthusiasm in biomedical research. Moreover, the program has given me opportunities to organize lectures, for instance the ones given by Nick Lane, and it gave me my first international scientific experiences. Therefore, I hope that the foundation can increase the contribution of the Honours Program to each honours student's enthusiasm and development.

Currently, I’m a third year student of the bachelor Biomedical Sciences at the Utrecht University. I’ve been intrigied by all the biological processes in our human body for a long time and I am very interested in the clinical approach as well. Eventually, the patients are the people that have to benefit from our research, in my opinion. For the Honours Program, I am writing a systematic review about possible associations between sugar consumption and pancreatic cancer; a topic with a lot of contrary conclusions. As treasurer of our foundation, I take care of all the financial responsabilities, such as the yearly trip abroad and interfacultary symposia. In addition, I like to spend my time many times a week on several different sports, i.e. fitness, running and squash.

Not only am I born and raised in the beautiful city of Utrecht, now I am also studying here. I started studying Biomedical Sciences in September 2014 because I was very interested in the human body and everything that comes along with it. This Honors Program provides me with the perfect opportunity to immerse myself in a subject of my own choice. I find the existence of this foundation really important and that is the reason why I take part in the board of the HBU in which I fulfill the role of vice-president. Of course I also have a life outside the university. Since September 2015 I became a member of rowing association Orca and I still do athletics at the same athletics track as where I started years ago as a child.

Since September 2012, I’ve been studying Biomedical Sciences at the Utrecht University. In my quest for an extra challenge, after the first year I chose to enroll in the extracurricular honours programme, during which, apart from the foundation, my main focus has been processes involved in Alzheimer’s disease. This fits well with my ambition to do a master’s degree in Neuroscience and Cognition. Besides my studies and the honours programme, I enjoy to cook and bake, practice a variety of sports like yoga and fitness, and spend the remainder of my time with family and friends.

At secondary school I became very interested in exact science, especially the biological processes of life. That is why in september 2014 I started the Biomedical Science Bachelor in Utrecht. It is now my second year as a student and I have just started the Honours Program. In this program I seek an extra challenge. Within the HBU board I fulfill the role of secretary. When I am not studying I can often be found on the Judo mat or in the gym. During my holidays I love to go skiing or hiking in the mountains.

I started my studies Biomedical Sciences in Utrecht in 2013. I chose this studies, because I have always wanted to know how processes work in a sick or healthy body. At the end of my first year I enrolled for the Honours Programme, because I wanted to indulge myself in this field of interest and I liked to broaden my knowledge about this field and related fields. I’m a second year student at the Honours Programme now and I really enjoy participating in it. Next to my studies and the Honours Programme I have plenty of time to play the piano, to accompany orchestras and to play softball. Besides that I participate in the year representation of my studies and take part in the board of the foundation HBU. In the few hours that I have left, I like to be in the park with friends or with a good book.

My name is Imke Lankheet and I’m in the third year of the study Biomedical Sciences. I started the Honours Program last year and I really like it! My particular interests lie in the field of Neuroscience and that’s why I would like to follow the master Neuroscience and Cognition. This is my second year in the board of the HBU and I’m the treasurer. I also play field hockey at U.S.H.C. in the first ladies team. I’ve been playing hockey since I was six years old and therefore it’s definitely a great passion of mine.
